Zoo Part 2 - Elephants

August 19, 2014  •  4 Comments

Next stop was the Asian elephants which I had seen as we came in on the train and honestly, I wasn't too excited to go take pictures of.  Still something drew me there.    As I walked up to the enclosures and viewing areas I passed a sign about the elephant baby where it posted the times she would be out with her momma.   No times so I shrugged and walked on up anyway.

SURPRISE!   She was out with her momma an what a joy it was to watch that baby.  I think I could have stayed there all day watching her explore and learn her body and how it moved!    So yup, lots of photos of baby Jazmine and her mom, 20 year old Rozie (this is her second baby).   Jazmine was born October 2, 2013 so is not even a year old yet.    You can go learn more about her HERE.

Jazmine and Rozie were in an area by themselves that day and off in another area (where the pool is) were a few of the other ladies of the herd.    There was also a very intent zoo employee up in the area with notebook and 2 way radio in hand reporting very precise information on one of the elephants who was on watch of some sorts.   When I left the zoo these ladies were then back in the rear enclosure and there was yet another employee there outside the enclosure taking notes and reporting on this girl.   Never did find out why.   Anyway here are some shots of the other ladies in the herd.  Yes that is a log not an elephant body!

Oh yes - now I see it IS the Albuquerque zoo. I recognize that Rosie anywhere. Amazing shots. You captured it better than if I were there myself. Big smiles here : )

Such amazing creatures and, as always, great photos.

I would have enjoyed the time observing the baby too! Perhaps the other elephant they were watching was ill or maybe she was getting close to giving birth?? Who knows:) I enjoyed all your photos!

AHH---how sweet. Jazzmine is a cutie --and looks very healthy. So Rozie is 20, huh? How long do elephants live? You may have answered this one--but I missed it....

Great photos of the animals..
Hugs,
Betsy
