Ohhh sorry, I took SO MANY photos here that I'm splitting this up. I will admit I know zippo about the logging industry and since Crater Lake wasn't on our go to list till the sun came out, we decided one day to just wander over to the Collier Logging Museum and poke around (which you totally can do). It is highly recommended if you are interested in history, logging or just a gear head kind of guy. They have a great brochure at the site I linked to previously and lots of information there. Yes, I'd put it as a must see if you are in the area and I think we spent probably a couple of hours there.
Again, a mix of phone and dslr photos and I just can't help it that some of them screamed at me to have some creativity put on them!
There were a couple pieces of equipment that had these kinds of wheels, it appears they took a slab of tree, formed the iron wheel around it and then as the inside deteriorated, some even appeared to have jammed other pieces of wood in the holes.
I am not a "gear head" by any means but it is freaking amazing to me the types of equipment and what they worked with. Not only that but that someone invented and built these things! Wow.....
Below is a close up of the blade above - how could I resist that name?
A more modern portable saw mill which they still use in demonstrations today. I kind of thought it looked like some monster torture device you'd see in castle dungeons.
The crane above and loader talked about below were both run on rails. The rail car wheels would raise and lower as needed and these were both as big as houses!
Just wanted to share some of the other signs with interesting information on them. They even had an entire tug boat on display!
Next post I'll share the rest of the photos (a lot of em) that I took at the museum. I had a blast doing close up shots of much of this old equipment and photos of some of the old buildings they've brought on to the sight.
