It is always a challenge to find a lovely RV park anywhere on the coasts. Let's face it, they are busy places in the summer. I was lucky to find a park that was somewhat directly west of Champoeg so it wasn't adding a bunch of driving time and that was right at the beach. Those were my requirements - oh yes and power and water.
Cape Lookout State Park is in general a tent, yurt and cabin campground (read 170 tent sites and 35 RV sites). If you don't mind the horrid road to get to it (from either direction) it isn't bad. I would never want to be here during a busy weekend though as the sites are small have limited space between them. That said, it is simply walk over the dune to get to a lovely beach and the ocean (no you can't see it from the campground). It is also only a few miles of bumpy road back up to the trails to hike out to Cape Lookout. Seriously, the roads were bad even without towing a trailer so you've been warned.
The park facilities were nice, the staff was also very helpful. I didn't check out the bathrooms and showers (hey I hauled mine 800 miles I was going to use it) and my site was literally right next door to the bathroom/showers but I did have water, power (30 amp) and sewer at my site (guess you get that when right there by the bathroom). Most of the sites were not shaded except for the few at the very end of the A road. Again, not unusual for the beach location.
My site was A38 and was not level side to side and the pad is sunken down so I parked way to the right so I could put up the dog pens. BAD IDEA as the entire pad was a lake by the first morning from the rains (as in 4" of water). If it happens to rain a lot and you don't want to exit into a puddle, park to the left so you exit your rig onto the grass area. The picnic table can be moved if needed.
The only other note is that there are no trash receptacles except one dumpster at the exit. Unfortunately they didn't actually mention that when you arrive but again, not a big deal.
The beach was lovely, flat and sandy and you could walk for a long ways. There was also a mowed area they considered a "dog park" at the end of the A road - honestly, it was okay to walk but the mosquitos were so bad it wasn't exactly fun in the evenings! Stick to the beach and a leash. As for dogs, if yours are small, don't leave them off leash or unattended outside at all - the very first night we popped over the dune to the beach and immediately saw 3 bald eagles on the beach and in the trees on the dune.
I'd give this a 3 out of 5 - again based on expectations and I'm sure the 2 days of rain didn't help my rating. Still it was quiet but the rough road to get there and the spacing of the sites cost it stars in my book and honestly it won't be high on my list. I've explored most of that northern part of the coast over the years now and this park won't be a draw for me as a hub location.
